Regional problems?
FiftyIn50What societal problems is your region known for and do they affect you?
My blogging prompt to day for FiftyIn50.
I'm not sure I can speak knowledgeable about this topic. Like every region, I am sure we have our share of issues: poverty, homelessness, drink, drugs....
I live quite rural, in Scotland in a small village of about 150 people. Our nearest large town is 40 minutes by car. There are a few small towns nearer.
They say that rural communities around the region are blighted by drink and drug issues. I honestly can say I have never been aware of it, and it has not affected me in any way.
I do my bit in the community -- volunteering for various projects. I've organised food collections to support food banks near-by. I've fund-raised for causes. On a daily basis I am not affected and I feel lucky.
Some years ago I did volunteer on a charity helpline. People would call in with a eclectic mix of challenges in their life; some were suicidal. I was there to listen, offer support, and signpost them to specialist support group that could help. It was my most direct contact with social challenges.
